The Electronic Passport was officially adopted by Brazil in January and now the document features an electronic data recording chip inserted on the cover which provides better security against fraud.
This was the subject of the lecture conducted by the Brazilian Federal Police Forensic Expert Ivo de Carvalho Peixinho, member of the Information Technology Section of the Brazilian Federal Police. The event took place at the Superior Network School, instaled at the Convention Center Rubens Gil de Camilo, in Campo Grande, Brazil, where the 12º RNP Workshop (WRNP).
According to the Forensic Expert, the Brazilianl document meets all the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO) requirements, an international agency that regulates the passport issuing. In addition, Peixinho pointed out that Brazil has adopted a series of optional protocols that makes the new passport more effective against fraud.
In addition to the new chip, the system consists of devices that are capable of acquiring the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) information and comparing it with the data on the chip. This occurs at airports in Portugal which adopted the electronic immigration system that checks the authenticity of passports, replacing the immigration officer. “Through an agreement with Portuguese immigration authorities, we installed two booths in Brasilia airport and we're making the first tests on the departure and arrival terminals at the Kubitschek Internation Airport”, said the Forensic Expert. Started in May 2009, the system implementation is being tested. If successful, the electronic immigration booths will be expanded to other states.
